Present Simple use – for the future

  1. We use the present simple to discuss future events based on timetables set by organizations, not by us. Include a future time expression like ‘tomorrow’ or ‘at seven thirty’. For questions, use ‘when’ or ‘what time’.
  • School starts at nine tomorrow.
  • What time does the film begin?
  • The plane doesn’t arrive at seven; it arrives at seven thirty.
  1. We use the present simple to talk about the future following words like ‘when’, ‘until’, ‘after’, ‘before’, and ‘as soon as’. These are known as subordinate clauses of time.
  • I will call you when I have time. (Not: ‘will have’.)
  • I won’t go out until it stops raining.
  • I’m going to make dinner after I watch the news.
