Present Continuous use – temporary situations

We use the present continuous for temporary situations in the present, even if the action isn’t happening right now.

  • John’s working in a bar this summer. (He might not be working at this exact moment.)
  • I’m reading a really great book. (I don’t need to be reading it at that exact moment.)
  • She’s staying with her friend for a week.

We often pair the present continuous with phrases like ‘at the moment’, ‘for a few months’, or ‘these days’ to indicate that the situation covers the entire time period.

Stative verbs cannot be used in the present continuous. To describe temporary situations with stative verbs, use the present simple instead.
