Present Continuous use – for the future

We use the present continuous to discuss definite future arrangements, typically with a future time expression such as ‘tonight’ or ‘next week’. This indicates that we have already made plans and are confident the event will occur.

  • I’m meeting my father tomorrow.
  • We’re going to the beach this weekend.
  • I’m leaving at three o’clock.

Stative verbs cannot be used in the present continuous. For definite future arrangements involving stative verbs, use a different tense, such as ‘be going to’.

  • I’m going to be in Glasgow this weekend. (Not: I’m being in Glasgow this weekend.)
