Activity 01 – Example dialogs

Scenario 1    Alexander is unsure what’s happening with a request he made
Alexander: Hey Simon, have you heard from Anthony regarding the event next week? Simon: Hey Alexander. No, I’m afraid not. What’s up?Alexander: Well, I’m not entirely sure what’s happening on Anthony’s end and I need to get his go ahead for the planned timetable and guestlist I’ve put together. He hasn’t gotten back to me since Thursday, and I have no idea what’s causing the holdup.Simon: Actually, I’m not 100% sure, but I think he might have taken some time off work for a private matter. I remember Gina telling me yesterday. She’s probably handling his tasks, so why don’t you send her an email?Alexander: Yeah, that’s possible. I’ll get on to her right away. I hope Anthony’s alright, thanks for telling me.
Scenario 2    Gina is confirming things for an upcoming meeting with Anthony
Gina: Hey Anthony, do you have any idea what time the wrap up meeting is scheduled for next month?Anthony: Hi Gina, I’m not really sure, but I heard Simon saying it will probably be on the last Thursday.Gina: Okay, thanks. Oh, one more thing, sorry. Anthony: SureGina: Do you think the updates will be ready in time? William told me that he only has two more tests to complete. What do you think?Anthony: I’m not exactly sure, but it sounds plausible I suppose? He’s very experienced, so I trust his judgment.
Scenario 3    William is talking with Simon about his current work situation
William: Good morning Simon. How have you been?Simon: Oh hi William, it’s been a while. How are things going in your section?William: Not great to be honest, we’re not sure if we’ll be able to hold the meeting with Yonzen group at the upcoming trade show in Nagoya tomorrow. Simon: Oh, that’s too bad. What happened? Do you think they might have lost interest in our proposal? William: Well, that might be it, but I was just also told that apparently they’re dealing with an urgent production line issue at one of their plants and have indicated that they may have to cancel, but I’m not entirely sure.  Simon: That might be the case actually, because I heard one of my team members mention something about that earlier. William: That’s probably it then.
Scenario 4 Gina is unsure how to complete a document
Gina: Hey  , how are you? Do you have a minute?Anthony: Sure  , how can I help you? Gina: Well, I’m not sure how to fill in this compliance document for Yonzen group. Do you have any experience with these? I’m not sure where to begin. Anthony: Ah yes, I’ve had to fill out a similar one a few months back. Let me have a look. Oh, this one looks different…Gina: It’s a strange format, isn’t it?Anthony: Yep, I’m really sorry, but I haven’t got a clue how to proceed. You’ll have to ask Ito-san. She’s usually up to date on these things.
Scenario 5 Ryan is checking Williams presentation materials
William: Hello Ryan, would you mind checking my presentation materials for tomorrow?

Ryan: Sure, let’s have a look. Oh, you’ve put your headings in that format?

William: Yeah, is it a problem? I was thinking about that, actually.

Ryan: Well, to be honest, it might not work as well as if you used this other font here.

William: I see, you think it mightn’t be clear enough that way?

Ryan: Exactly, I’m not 100% on this, but it would probably look better this way. It’ll need to be as clear as possible. What do you think?

William: I think you might be right. Thanks for your feedback.

Ryan: No problem. Let me know if you want me to check it again after you’ve made those changes.

William: Will do, thanks.
