I should call my parents more often.
She should contact her manager.
Should I finish this today?
Should
The first modal we will look at is should.
Should = a good idea!
We use this to talk about better things we can do. We just put the verb after it:
I should study more
Michael should spend more time with his family
We can also use it for advice
You should relax more on weekends.
Michael should try to find a new job.
We can also begin a question, to ask what is best to do.
Should I arrive at 2pm?
Should he check the reports?
There is a less common verb ‘ought to’ which has the same meaning, but is a little more old fashioned.
We ought to finish this report before lunch.
